Summer Reading Documents and Information Your summer reading notes for both the book chat and My Brother, My Sister, and I are due on Thursday, September 1. We will be using My Brother, My Sister, and I for a baseline 7th grade writing assessment at some point during our first two weeks of school. Week of October 17, 2011 Monday: In class, we will continue to revise the rough drafts of the Examining American Culture essays, specifically looking at voice and word choice. Revision log can be found below. Any of the 15 required revisions that are not finished by the end of class are considered homework. Additionally, students should be working independently at home to complete the Soundtrack Project (directions and graphic organizers available under "Extended Assignment"). Tuesday: In class, we will begin our vocabulary program with using Unit 2.1, "Citizen Power!" For homework: Complete pages 39-41 in "Vocabulary for Success" packet. Week of October 11, 2011 Tuesday: Complete graphic organizers/drafting sheets for all 3 body paragraphs AND conclusion paragraph. Bring these to class tomorrow along with your intro paragraph. Wednesday/Thursday Long Blocks: In class, we are learning about the 30-15-15 Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes. Students will become and expert on various roots through a Word Biography project (see attached below). Homework: Complete word biography. Also, a typed draft of your American culture essay is due so we can begin revisions on voice and word choice. Friday: Using the songs and lyrics of Adele and Cher Llyod, we will be examining how artists and authors establish voice through elements like word choice, topic, and tone.
Week of October 3, 2011 Monday: In class, we will be continuing to work on the intro paragraphs for the Examining American Culture essay. For homework, please type a draft of this paragraph. Tuesday: In class, we outlined the topics for our body paragraphs and brainstormed ideas for topic sentences/sentence starters. Students began work on the body paragraph #1. This work was handed in to Ms. Korhn at the end of the class period. For homework, please work on your independent reading. Wednesday and Thursday: We will continue to draft the body paragraphs for our essays in class. Use this lull in "worksheet style" homework to progress in your IR book. If you have finished your IR book, you can begin working on the soundtrack project. Also, please complete the IR Update Form for homework. Friday: In class, we will be taking another MCAS pre-assessment. This time, it will assess general reading comprehension and open response awareness.
